The authors estimate that there are currently 15,734 registered births, comprising 2,636,858 births per 2,000 population aged 16-23 years and 3,936,947 births each year since 1990. This represents a 25. 3 per cent increase in total births per 1,000 population. The authors found that, without the use of the contraceptive pill, the number of females aged 16-23 years would steadily increase for this age group. The number of females aged 16-23 years attending the local church, primary or secondary school, would also increase from 4,500 in 1993 to 6,400 in 2017-18, with some families of this age receiving at least one abortion. Our findings suggest that the increased fertility of these females makes them particularly vulnerable to the unintended pregnancies resulting from the availability of illegal abortion, the authors concluded.
